[Other Borders] - General Info Thread

edited January 2017 in Directed Promotion
This is a general info and updates thread for "Other Borders". Feel free to AMA.

Basic Info:
  • Other Borders began as an expansion to Tom McGrenery's "Malandros".
The "standalone edition" is in preparation for a Fall 2016 release.
  • What it's about: Drugs, Money and Magic in the modern American southwest.
  • Tone and genre: Magical Realism. Drug cartels, cops, curanderas, Santa Muerte and Mestizo magic.
  • Like its predecessor, Other Borders is a hybrid system: a stripped-down version of Robin Laws' DramaSystem with a die-based resolution mechanic influenced by PbtA.
  • To my knowledge, it's the first DramaSystem game to include magic-using character types. (Correct me if I'm wrong!)

  • Love the thematic parallels you're drawing here, feels fresh but perfectly natural.

Would love to read and comment. I don't have any familiarity with Malandros, whether that's a drawback or an asset in this case, I don't know.

The themes and mechanics sound very interesting; I would like to give it a read and possibly a play-test. Thanks :)
  • Check your messages.
  • I'm thinking "Breaking Bad" where Saul is a sorcerer.
  • How well do you think this would run in a two-hour slot at a noisy bar?

Two hour slot in a noisy bar? Hmm. Well there's very little crunch and no tactical table concerns, I think it might work as well as most any other storygame under such conditions. Like any other DramaSystem game, character creation requires some conversation while everyone works out their relationships to each other. If it's possible to create your characters ahead of time, I'd do that.

I guess maybe I'd recommend working under such conditions for more experienced players: people who can get the concept and come up with scene ideas fairly quickly, because 2 hours is not a whole lot of time. I'm not sure you'd finish a whole episode.

OTHER BORDERS - A modern-day game of drugs, money and magic in the American southwest. Based on DramaSystem by Robin D. Laws, and influenced by D. Vincent Baker's Apocalypse World engine. This Standalone Edition contains all you need to play (except 2 standard dice). Available now in PDF format at DrivethruRPG.com and RPGnow.com

  • As a Malandros backer, I received the "expansion" version - which I found a very interesting read indeed. Has anything been significantly changed in this standalone edition, compared to the one I already own - apart from presentation?
  • edited November 2016
The standalone version has been significantly rewritten as informed by playtesting and reader feedback. It includes (its own analogs for) all sections of the Malandros and DramaSystem CC rules that did not exist in the extension version, many of these having been substantially altered for OB.

It's 128 pages. Aside from being prettier and having much more art, the standalone edition also contains a map of Entrelugares, more info on the town itself, a few new Signature Moves, some short flavor fiction, prices for illegal stuff, a table for random NPC motivations, another for gang names, a Moves Index, a Glossary of Game Terms, and a regular Index.

I've reorganized and rewritten many of the sections to make them easier to read and learn, and I have moved the more advanced rules to an "optional" section. I plan on releasing a hardcover edition, in addition to perfectbound and PDF.
