The Elevator Pitch Thread

edited May 2014 in Story Games
So, I wonder, how many games really sell themselves in a sentence (fragment)?

Monsterhearts: Play sexy queer teenage monster heartbreakers dealing with angst, horror, and heartbreak.
Dogs in the Vineyard: Inexperienced virgin teenagers with guns try to keep the peace and figure out what's right in the Wild West.
Lady Blackbird: Steampunk firefly.

I'd play all those games!

So let's see if we can't build a library of pitches. Let's keep it to twenty words, and don't be afraid to give a different pitch for a game already specified.

OD&D: Crawl into some terrifying underground hole; if you're lucky, run away with as much minor treasure as you can carry...
  • Apocalypse World: Crawl into some terrifying underground hole, get laid; if you're lucky, run away with only a flesh wound.
  • Microscope: tell the history of a culture through the key moments that change it.
  • OD&D: Crawl into some terrifying underground hole; if you're lucky, run away with as much minor treasure as you can carry...
Oh man, the older the game the more divergent the attitudes:

OD&D: Rootless mercenaries trespass into a subterranean world of terror and darkest magic in search of gold, glory and ancient mysteries!

The 'Hood: Hard men, hard moves, hard choices.
Sci-Fi Beta Kappa: Alien slackers with superpowers.
  • Kingdom: The fate of a community rests in the hands of a few; who speaks for the people, who knows what'll happen, and who decides?

Machinas: Race in the wasteland and try to survive leading the pack.

5150: Urban Renewal: The hard SF future has come, and you're just trying to scrape by on a dirty world that doesn't care.

Watch the World Die: Does this need a pitch beyond the title?

Trigger Happy: The world hates you and everyone you know; kick it in the teeth before you blow it away!

5150: Battalion Commander: The whole battalion looks to you for command; do the bugs win or do you stomp them out forever?

Red Streets, Blue Mats: You've got the eye of the tiger, fists of fury, and are ready to go over the top to prove you're the very best of the best!

All Things Zombie: The apocalypse is over, and the dead carried the day. Now what?

God-King: Five adventurers penetrate the mysteries of a mysterious land, and the darkest secrets of the heart.

Wraith: The Oblivion: Life sucked. You died. It still sucks.

Sorcerer: A demon heeded your call and now hides in your shadow, but who is the real master?

Eternal Contenders: Down on their luck gladiators seek fame, glory, and spiritual awakening in a city of the dead that never was.

(Man, I can do this all night.)
  • Fiasco: collaboratively play out a Coen Bros. movie.

There is a home page dedicated for this kind of stuff. Can't remember the address though. I've done a pamphlet for the Indie Room in Sweden - a collection of game masters that attends conventions to show and pitch Forge games and homebrews. Here are the translations of the pitches but they are usually backed up with keywords. For example, InSpectres has the keywords Ghostbusters, McDonalds, Big Brother, paranormal.

    LESS THAN TWO HOURS
The Cat of Excellence: you are nominated for the glorious Golden Cat.

Drakar & bananer: reach the final stage to fight the boss.

GxB: who is Momoko's final pick out of her three dates?

InSpectres: action-packed mission to capture ghosts.

Keep It Sunny: The TV series about a bunch of idiots that owns a bar.

Mumins värld: something unpredictable happens when we're about to pick some apples.

Null State: something goes wrong. No one takes responsibility. You have to clean it up.

    TWO TO FOUR HOURS
Bad Family: play a family similar to the Simpsons or Family Guy.

Best Friends: the group of girls that loves outwards but hates inwards.

Det sjätte inseglet: every hero hides a dark secret.

Dungeon World: an elf, a dwarf and a hobbit walks down into a dungeon...

Hollowpoint: bad people doing bad things for the bad reasons.

Kagematsu: get Kagematsu to love you in order to save the village.

Microscope: choose a world and explore it's history!

Prosopopée: In a surreal world with it's statue quo removed.

The Quiet Year: what happens in the village that survived the war?

    Utpost: hell is other people.

    FOUR TO SIX HOURS
Apocalypse World: the world is broken. What do you do?

Don't Rest Your Head: no matter what you do: don't fall asleep!

Lady Blackbird: you're in a cell on the airship The Hand.

Monsterhearts. inspired by Buffy, Twilight, and similar.

Psychodrame: "How could this happen? Oh, my God! How?!"

Remember Tomorrow: mega-corps stands before your goal.

Svart av kval, vit av lust: what are you willing to sacrifice?

Passive aggressiveness ftw, yeaaah! Go here and copy-paste your contribution.
  • About that website... how comes all English entries have negative scores?
With 3:16 achieving an astounding -81 with a rather catchy tagline???
Only 6 titles have positive scores, from the +1 of Witch Quest to the +51 of Shab-Al-Hiri Roach.

    What's the deal?
