I just spotted Robert Bohl saying that Sign in Stranger is coming out for GenCon, and realized that I haven't really had my ear to the ground for new releases this year. So please, enlighten me! What will the New Hotness be? What should I send my network of lackeys to retrieve from that vast bazaar of gaming?

At the Design Matters booth, I'll be releasing Ribbon Drive. It's a game about road trips, and letting go on the open road. Mix CDs are an integral and driving part of the game. It's diceless, GMless and easy for new gamers to pick up. It's an intense game, but a slow-burning and soft one, too.

It's sold with a mix CD (featuring some really cool artists).

Fiasco will miss Gen Con but is definitely the New Hotness. It's a game about powerful ambition and poor impulse control inspired by movies like Blood Simple and Burn After Reading. It's GMless, plays in two and a half hours, and is delicious like bacon from a pig that was only fed bacon.

Wouldn't that probably give us Mad Pig Disease? I'm not sure I want Mad Pig Disease.

Geiger Counter Gamma might be there, but I won't be, the game is free, and I'm not sure who might be giving copies away yet. A nicer printed edition could emerge later in the year (by Halloween?), depending on whether Harper, Ben, and Ping consider the game done or not (they're my consultants). The final version might even be published by someone else (like how Evil Hat is publishing Paul's Penny for My Thoughts), but I need to wait until the game's done before trying to make arrangements.

If Sign in Stranger is coming out, it deserves to be the new hotness. Also, Penny for My Thoughts and Danger Patrol (even though it's free and in Alpha!).

P.S. Also Mythender, even though it might not be done. Honestly, playtestable games in Alpha / Beta / Gamma whatever can be just as exciting as full releases.

I'm fully willing to include those in my query if they can be retrieved and conveyed to me in California.

I was hoping to have a "double-secret" playtest packet at GenCon to hand to people, but it wasn't in the cards. Still, I hope for a playtest doc in the next couple months.

I'll have a Quickstart (basically a rules light preview) of Mecha at Gen Con. I think I know what booth it will be at, but I'm not going to say for 100% sure. It's not really a beta or an ashcan since the game is basically written, but won't be ready until after GC.

I'll have the playtest document for Homecoming: One Soldier's Story. It's a game for three or more people that explores what happens to a soldier when he comes back from war, and tries to re-integrate into civilian society. It's a standalone game, but is also recommended for continuing the stories of your favorite characters from other games, such as carry: a game about war and Black Cadillacs.

I won't be there, but there will be free copies at the Pirate Jenny booth.

I thought that the Dragon Age RPG was going to be out for GenCon, but looking further it says September. Still, it could be one of those "limited copies for GC, then the real deal come September" things.

    Elizabeth,

Do you by any chance have this game in digital format, and would be willing to share? I won't be going back to civilian life from a war zone, but I will be reintegrating into non-deployed life in the next few months.

If I'm lucky, I'll be back in time to see Orion turn 2.

And it looks like I won't have to write Grand Tour: A Game About Travel anymore, which actually excites me. I'll be getting this game and taking it for a spin. The description here and on the website alone give me high hopes that I'll finally have an RPG about travel that I can play and promote the heck out of!

John Wick is putting out "A Game Called Fear, An Anthology Horror Game". This is a teaser YouTube video:

also a little info at the bottom of this thread:

    Should be very interesting.

My World of Near will be available, unless the printer fails. I doubt it'll be the new hotness, being a slow and deep work, but I'm hoping to sell several dozen copies to cover the costs of the trip.
  8.  # 18
Time & Temp will be out. A game wherein you have the honor of playing temp workers hired to police all of history for the future of humankind, for minimum wage, and for a boss who is younger than you and far more successful than you'll ever be.
  9.  # 19
I'll be at GenCon Indy with Chronica Feudalis. You'll be able to find the came in print at the Indie Press Revolution booth (# 2139).

I'm also running two events as part of Indie Games Explosion at 1pm on Friday and Saturday (RPG0902797 & RPG0902798) which there are still slots open for.

I played Time and Temp at JiffyCon and had a stupid amount of fun. I'm really excited about it.

At the Hamster Press booth I've got a bunch of new games.

    The new hotness is

"Thunder Hamsters and the the Temple of Cheese"

which is a board game about hamster heroes who run into the temple of cheese steal things. Not strictly speaking a story game but it use Matrix game rules so it can be if the players want it to. Oh! They also get to pee on things... needless to say I'm expecting this one to sell well.

I also have two new story games out:

Sherlock Holmes: The Return of Col. Moran - in which Holmes has tracked Moriarty to Dover where he meets Moran - just back from France. There are strong Dreyfus affair themes which give this game intrigue potential that Emile Zola would appreciate.

The Graveyard Shift - a Cthulhu game set in a graveyard with spooky grave diggers, juvenile delinquints, a mad scientist and a hero sheriff.

From late last year (but after Gen Con) I have

Oswald's Genie - a kid who looks remarkably like me in 5th grade finds a genie in the market. It used to belong to the vizier who wants it back. A chace ensues.

Punch and Judy - in which you make up a Punch and Judy puppet show.

Blood and Puppets - another puppet show game but with pirates and ninjas!

All of these use the Engle Matrix Game so players have 10 to 15 coins to buy the right to make actions happen. They make up the actions and another player decides how likely they are. Other players may buy counter-arguments. A big dice-rolling contest settles outcomes. The top three games are being run by my demo team.

    I'm psyched!

Once you have played Fiasco, you will gladly pay the price of Mad Pig Disease for its bacony goodness, over and over again. Jason's modesty (really!) prevents him from telling you that Fiasco is so much fun that GenCon just isn't big enough to hold it.

Some really awesome stuff in this thread! I wish I could be there. Sigh.

Ganakagok will be available at Gencon this year at IPR. For those unfamiliar with it, it's a story-game about how the people who live on a vast iceberg beneath a starry sky in a world of eternal night deal with the rising of the Sun for the first time ever, and the changes that brings. Think Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear meets Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall"; it's a quasi-Inuit Silmarillion as seen from the inside looking out. This much-revised version of the rules puts a heavy emphasis on procedural explanation for the GM so that it's ready to run "out of the box," literally--it's a zero-prep game that relies on an oracular "Ganakagok tarot" to generate situation and prompt the narration of consequences. I'll be available for demos, and I'm running the full game as part of the Indie Games Explosion on Saturday, Aug 15, at 1:00 pm in Omni Fisher Ballroom 10; as far as I know, all 5 slots are still empty.

I will have an ashcan of Reality Cops. Currently still waffling on whether I will be selling it through the forge, or handing it out for free in the evenings. Depends mostly on if I can get the layout whipped into shape.

The limited edition of Kagematsu, with crafted covers by me, will be at Gen Con at the Pirate Jenny booth (# 2023).

It's about efforts by the women of a Japanese village to convince a wandering ronin to protect them from a dangerous threat. From much playtesting I've honed it into a dramatic and memorable roleplaying experience.

I'm very excited to be offering it at Gen Con this year.

I'll probably be handing out free ashcan copies of Revolucion, a game about toppling the status quo. Numbers depend on my printing abilities between now and when my flight leaves. Full rules plus 3 quick play scenarios.

I may also have a one-two page quick play version.

I'm not there this year either, but my partner Nathan Leeson is. We're releasing our ribofunk space colonization game Venus 2141 there at the Forge booth.

If you're just a little curious, take a look at the Venus 2141 Web Site. Lots more art and interesting things in the book too.

I played two new games and enjoyed them both, but in different ways. Bill White's Gakanagok is a game of epic stories, rich and redolent with meaning, Willow Palacek's Escape from Tentacle City is funny and great happy fun.
