Episode 42 of the www.thegamemastershow.com has some interesting thoughts on "heroine's journey" and issues female/male GM's may bring to table differently.

I watched that, and dug it.

I was just now, though, inspired by your Reverse Engineering contest: Imagine a mini-contest where someone creates the first part of a section on the background of the game, and the designers have to read it, expand on it, and write the rules for this game. A cool little idea.

There's a gentleman who makes fantastic templates for index cards for the hipster PDA (A stack of 3x5 cards held together with a black binder clip) who has decided to take it to the next level, and has created templates for cardnets - laying out networks of ideas on cards. The utility of these for a certain style of game more or less jumped out at me.

[1] He's... reinventing... HyperCard. In hardcopy format. I realize that's the point of the "hipster PDA", but... this is so wrong. Also so genius, particularly for gaming, but still... it hurts my head.*

Incidentally Rob, he calls you out in the comments and says
CALLING ROB D. ON THE “STORY GAMES” FORUM! Thanks for steering people over to look at CardNets. I’d love to develop a line of free custom card templates specifically for game playing applications. Please drop me a line (plagasse@avwrites.com) so we can map out some ideas.

Your very creative idea for using CardNets is exactly the kind of imaginative application that I’m hoping these cards will inspire.

*Edit: just to be clear, I do think this and the general hPDA concept is a cool and clever way to make good use of note cards. It just boggles my mind to see the hypercard concept taken out of computers - which (ought to) make it easy to use and manage - and put back into the physical world - where you have to fuss about with physical cards, find space to lay them out, and not lose any.

[2] I'd suggest cards with a layout specific for Relationship Maps

They'd have the main space where you write the name and/or draw the portrait of the person/idea, and on the borders some space to write a connector "id" (much like the cardnet, I guess), and a relationship "nature"

I'm running a contest where you can win a free RPG bundle of goodness (2nd & 3rd bring home prizes, too) if your driver wins the Indy 500. Only 33 spots, so follow the link, register if need be, post in the thread, and hope for the best! As a native Hoosier, I felt like doing something to honor my hometown's big event, and thought this would be a fun way to do it and give out some RPGs at the same time. Link:

    Indy 500 Contest--Win A RPG Bundle!!!

Registration ends Saturday, and spots are filling up quick!

[3 and out] I'm not sure I understand the point of the review. It's like saying the Lord of the Rings as a whole is no good because the story takes a while to get going with all the running around in the Shire and Tom Bombadil and Old Man Willow. Wouldn't it be better to review the show as a whole?

I personally go through phases with SoK. There are times I listen to it regularly, other times I put it down for a while. (Yes, I got tired of Luke Crane interviews after the first 3 and stopped listening for a bit). However, the high probability of awesome in any given episode means I've always ended up coming back so far.

    Good job, guys.

    RPS: The Game

The real rules for Rock-Paper-Scissors, a time-honored analog game.

Rock Paper Scissors originates as an early attempt to simulate the Prussian/Hungarian conflict of 1842, where the Prussians armed their grand imperial forces with Rocks. However, a Russian-funded Hungarian counter-attack with Paper lead to the complete rout of the Prussian forces and the later capituation of Prussia to the Parisian commune. Scissors was added later for game-balance purposes, in a move which offends historical purists to this day.

No doubt when you check out the Mutants & Masterminds supplement, Adventures Into Darkness, it will not be due to Ken Hite's extraordinary coolness but because I did the stat blocks for some of the characters, no doubt :D

It has been a running joke with many of my friends that everytime I produce something for some game they spell my name wrong - I've been Dan and even David in many, many books. My BW credits luckily ended that cycle so it's cool to see that the curse finally seems to behind me :) I still wince a little before I look at such things, however.

Here is the newest credit on an RPG. I did the mechanical write-ups for several of the characters. The more supernatural heroes and villains were mine (such as The Ghost, the Mask, the Devilfish and The Yellow Lama).

It was a pleasure to work with Ken and this was a great little project to add my name to. Hope you check out the game. There is a lot of good fodder for the pulp grist here.

Working on Maid RPG got me to check out a panel at the local anime con on butler cafes, a relatively new phenomenon in Japan. I took notes and did a write up (with links) on my gaming blog here.

Butler cafes and maid cafes are interesting in how they present a fantasy world, and are creative in very specific ways. The wait staff create characters--and the butlers are often played by women--but the customers are always themselves.

Role-Playing Public Radio has an interview with Tarn Adams, creator of Dwarf Fortress, the rouguelike, text-based, fanasy world sim.

There's a lot of talk of Dwarf Fortress and it's root in RPGs here. One of my favorite bits is where Tarn talks about how players of the game "interact with mechanics that aren't there yet".

So, there's this company that mainly sells board games supplies in bulk (as in, minimum orders of 1,000 pieces), but they also sell "kits & bits," including a Game Inventor Kit that has a blank board and box, 5 dice, 2 spinners, and something like 170+ assorted playing pieces, counters, etc.

Someone use this to design RPGs. Please?

Fudge dice at Target? I bought it for a little under $5. Even my wife thought they were cool.

EDIT: Ah...well, they're a little weighted towards green. 3 green sides, 2 yellow, 1 red. Does anyone have any ideas on how to use them?

Decide Which color is the +1 side to match the genre. Like, you're playing Exalted where you want characters to be crazy powerfull, have the green side count as the +1. Playing Purist CoC where the best the group aims for is going crazy after they dynamite the bad guy? Have the red be +1 and the green the -1!!!

I'm sure there are other, better ideas out there. Could be fun, though. For more detail/headache, one could reassign the colors depending on the situationa nd the characters skills or splats. Like, a hefty warrior has a green +1 when fighting, but only a red +1 when doing magic. I can even see a nice character sheet where there are boxes with colors next to the variou straits to show which side is what for that rait.

    Penny Arcade/PvP D&D 4e Podcast

Posted by: Gabe on Penny Arcade Wizards of the Coast came to us months ago and wanted to run some ads for 4th edition. They wanted to do something more than just banner ads though and they asked us if we had any cool ideas. What we came up with is probably one of my favorite projects to date. Tycho and I sat down at a table with Scott Kurtz from PvP and a DM from WOTC and we played 4th edition. That probably doesn't sound awesome to you except that we also recorded the entire thing as a podcast.

Posted by: Wizards of the Coast The folks at Penny Arcade and PvP sat down with R&D’s Chris Perkins to play 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons (for some of them, it was their very first game of D&D). How did it go? Well, they recorded the entire session—which we’re thrilled to offer in episodic podcasts, along Penny Arcade comics commemorating the game!
