EDIT: ROUND ONE of the contest is over, but ROUND TWO is on.

    Deadline is Sunday, March 7th.

If you want to participate, tap in on this thread, below!

    ============================================
    ============================================
King of RPGs. So my buddy Jason (and artist Victor Hao) put about 8 years or so into this idea, and it finally was released a few weeks ago: A classic manga, complete with manga tropes ("He has the HIDDEN POWER to become The Greatest Roleplayer IN THE WORLD", etc), about tabletop gaming. I bought a copy for myself on Amazon. Then, having the stirrings of inspiration, I bought two more copies. Time for a contest to see who gets them.

The contest is this: You must create a comic. There are no size requirements (do it in one single panel; do it in a 4-panel strip; do it in a full 10 page comic; doesn't matter - any size/shape you want). There are no quality requirements (I suck at drawing, so I'll be doing stick people). The only format requirement is that your comic is exported into a JPG or GIF file (or multiple files). Tools used are up to you: MS Paint, live photographs, whatever.

Here are the topics you can choose from for your comic:

    * What is the craziest thing you have ever done (in the real world) for an RPG, in the course of playing or GMing?

    * What is a memorable experience you had while gaming, or as a result of gaming?

Contest ends Sunday, March 7th at 5:00PM EST. Submit your JPG or GIF image(s) to the email address storygames ATMARK gmail DOT com. You may submit as many entries as you want.

I will be the sole judge. I'll have no official critera for what I'm judging on, but I usually give attention to comics that make me smile/laugh, or make me think. I'll say now that the quality of the art will make no difference really (I love xkcd, smbc-comics for example), but if someone craps out an artistic masterpiece yeah I'll probably crumble and give them bonus points for effort/talent.

You don't have to be a regular poster or anything here to enter or win (so lurkers welcome!).

All entries will be posted. The two winners will each get a free copy of the manga King of RPGs shipped to them, anywhere in the world*.

    -Andy

*(if they already have a copy, they can either get a second one, or I'll ship the second copy out to anyone they would like me to)

    Just 5 days left, folks!

The entries are pouring in! And by "pouring in", I mean "I have one entry so far"! So here's your chance to bust out MS Paint and rock some stick figures into a cute tale about something that happened while gaming.

Hey all, winners have been picked and will post the pics in time. In short, the two people who participated both win! :-)

Sure, while the turnout was a little low, I think it can be chocked up to:

    * Me not promoting the event enough.
    * Kind of poor timing, and setting the deadline too soon.
    * Folks on the forum seem to be far more willing to take chances with words than with a new medium (art, crafting, etc), so I was bad not to recognize that,

    and probably most unforgivably:
    * I, too, meant to participate in this contest in order to show some amateurish stick figure RPG life: Unfortunately, due to poor planning, I too couldn't participate in my own gig.

So, overall it was kind of a bust. No big, lots of lessons for next time. I think I will try this sort of thing again, later this year or next. We'll see how it goes.

Will post the winning (ie submitted) comics in a bit!

    -Andy

Tell me about it. I just noticed the thread and thought "Oh cool! An excuse to draw something! Then I clicked on it and found out that I was too late.

Meh, maybe I'll draw something anyway.

You should run this contest again some other time, Andy. It's a fun idea. I also didn't catch it this time around.

Maybe the thread was invisible? First time I saw this, too.

Also: I totally had this idea for a gaming comic in 2003. Then I decided to publish MLwM in Finnish instead of making the comic. The rest is history, except the part where I can't figure how Jason managed to steal my idea. Maybe there's clues in the work itself, I'll obviously have to get it...

Making a thread sticky is a guaranteed way of making it totally ignorable. :-/

Same goes with all those other sticky threads up there.

Yeah I think Stickying it sort of hid it.

Also, I would have loved to participate but could not think of anything entertaining to do for either topic and OH SHIT I JUST THOUGHT OF ONE. Fuck.

Hah! That might be the real lesson here. Enough people expressed interest and commented on not seeing it that it's more than an anecdote, it's data!

SO I'LL TELL YOU ALL WHAT.

Since there are now many more eyes on this thread, you know what I'm going to do?

I'm going to do it again, right now.

(figure do it now before "con season" starts to rev up).

I'll buy two *more* copies of KING OF RPGs, to be awarded to the winners of this contest.

The rules are the same rules as above, including format, submission, etc.

The new deadline is March 7th, Sunday, at 5:00PM EST.

That gives everyone 3 full weeks, and 3 full weekends (2 if you're at Dreamation) to come up with something.

As always, amateurish/stick figures are not only welcome, they're expected!

If you intend to participate, go ahead and tap into this thread with a quick response. If I get at least 6 people who can say to themselves "Yeah, RIGHT NOW I am sincerely 100% in on this (sure things may come up and all, but I bet I can legitimately complete this)" and tap in by next Sunday Feb 21st, then I'll say Game On. If not, I'll come back later this year/next with a second attempt.

So if you're feeling it, tap in by announcing your involvement!

    Thanks!
    -Andy

(now the question is, do I sticky THIS thread now that it's active again? Or will that cause the same thing to happen again? :-) I'll just bump it a few times, maybe once a week)

    Don't sticky it! God no!

Bump it next week, that's good.

    Hey Bret, let's collaborate.

I think I just got stuck on interpretation: I sort of knew a "great gaming moment" I could illustrate, but I couldn't figure how to capture its greatness, even in a strip of three/four panels. (Maybe it wasn't all that great--more a "you had to be there" moment?)

And I can't recall doing anything crazy to game, if'n you assume dressing in fantasy garb for a whole weekend is sane.

Eh... maybe I'll get inspired before the weeks run out.

I'm tempted to do a comic about that time when my Dungeon Master taught me how to cast real spells but then my best friend hung herself because her character died so I surrendered my soul to someone else's religion. Someone would probably beat me to it, though.

No. At least, unless someone else wants to give a game as a prize as well. Actually, I've got some shit I'm not using anymore on my shelf, if you win I'll let you pick your prize from either the "King of RPGs Manga", or "one of the game books I have that I'm not using anymore".

OK, all: Here were the entries that we had over both rounds (Orr and Ping won the first round, Ping requested that her entry be pushed into the second round with the others).

ORR takes a stab at what it takes to play VAMPIRE THE MASQUERADE:

PING's piece (submitted originally by proxy) about a sentient ape meeting non-sentient apes.

PSEUDO gives us a day in the life piece about gaming, dating, and That Guy.

RICHARD encounters a player with anger issues.

ANDERS shows us the difference between LARPing and Tabletop.

PAUL plays out a scene from a VAMPIRE chronicle, mixing panel and text together.
(resized the original, click on the pic below for original size).

Thanks again everyone for jumping in! It was an interesting experience!

This was fun! I would love to have seen more entries of course but this is neat stuff all around.

I find Paul's Vampire comic very evocative, the whole being so much bigger than the parts. The mystique that I've always missed in Vampire is defenitely present here. I get a feeling that he was "doin it rite" as the kids say.

My personal favorite is Pseudo's comic: the minimalist style and story telling are just ingenious. Warm hearted with a dash of melancholy, a mix that always cathces me.

    And the winners are...

    PSEUDO

    and

    PAUL JONES

Thanks everyone for participating- It was really hard to decide! I really enjoyed them all!

Basically, DeBracy's comments echo my own regarding Pseudo's comic: Minimalist, very effective use of "ma" (to throw out a manga term) or "time/pacing", and yeah the self-depreciative humor in it gets me each time. Very clever.

On Paul's vampire one, although there's some weirdness about in it ("unbuttoned here breasts", etc), I really like the use of one panel to tell a story: Reminds me a bit of the old Prince Valiant full-page spreads, and a little bit of the traditional Chinese-style Manhua (albeit a blend of several pics in one "block") where theres a scene and explanatory text that relates to that scene. Takes comics in a new (western, anyway) direction. Tres cool.

Thanks again for your participation. Maybe we'll try another one of these in a few months!
