We have confirmed dates for Go Play NW! Go Play NW 2010 will be held Friday, June 18 - Sunday, June 20. We'll have more details coming up soon.

Go Play NW is a yearly gaming convention held in Seattle. It's all about getting together, playing games with good friends, and making new friends. This year's Go Play NW team is the same as last year: me (Tony Dowler), Ching-Ping Lin, and Philip LaRose, plus our team of indispensible Czars.

We also have a new Web page launching soon at http://www.goplaynw.org.

Whoa, it feels like the last one just happened.

If there are any fence-sitters, just go and have a fantastic time, please. Just do it.

My nuptials the weekend following will probably prevent me from going, so everyone else on earth please just go.

Hans, nooo! Who will break the ladies' hearts in The Upgrade?

Er, let me rephrase that: congratulations, but we'll miss you.

(oh and I think that's a typo in the announcement: it's Friday-Sunday of course)

    Bah, it's back-to-back with Origins. I might finally miss a GPNW. :/

(At least it isn't the same weekend as Origins, as it was previously.)

GPNW is like extremely well organized cake, if you like cake. I had the best time!

Thanks for announcing this, Tony. Hopefully I'll be able to make the trip again - last year was awesome fun.

Same location? And where do I sign up to volunteer for stuff. I'd really like to help out before the con.

I'm saving that date like Superman saves Lois Lane... or something.

I hear there may be gaming-themed deserts this year, which I will be attempting to help with (and by help with I do not just mean eat).

John, I only hear about this stuff second hand, but I think there's a new location. Tony, Ben or Ping should be able to say for sure.

I can honestly say I've been waiting since July for this announcement.

Thanks for all the hard work getting these organized!

We are still hammering out important final details and signing things so stay tuned.

Volunteering - John, I've got your name down. This is great. We will absolutely need help.

Chris, the first step is admitting you have a problem. ;)

GPNW is my favorite event of the year. And I include things like Christmas in that list :)

Last year, I played mostly with "old" friends. That was great! But this year I should make an effort to branch out more. Schedule some with people I know, some with people I don't, and leave a few slots open for spontaneous gaming.

Hey, if there's a 12-step program that involves Jeepform, sign me up!

So Chris, I just outed us that in July, pretty much right after GPNW 2009, we were already scouting the Hugo House for 2010. I think for fellow event organizers, this should come as no surprise, especially since most events have multi-year commitments with hotels. In our case, it was really that GPNW '09 was so amazing that we had the fire in the belly to get out there and get an even better place for 2010 - which, in my very humble opinion, we did.

So I live in New England, but I've got a friend trying to get me to go to this. I'm deliberating on the trip: what's unique about GPNW compared to other cons? In the parlance of rpg.net, I'm looking for someone to sell me on it.

It's like: I almost don't want to sell it to people, for fear that it'll grow and somehow the magic will be ruined.
There is certainly magic, and it is certainly good.

Go Play NW works hard to be about community, making friends, and playing games with real people. I've never been to a convention where I felt more comfortable, felt more connected, or had more meaningful game experiences.

Go Play has a friday night get-together feast, and I think the schedule also leaves room for meal breaks. It encourages people to be social.
Last year, there were coolers full of pop and beer and water for the attendees.

Good people, good gamings, amazingly tight organization, great locations, great social environment. Hurray!

Ben, have you been to JiffyCon yet? That's in Massachusetts. Honestly, I would go to the next JiffyCon before/after committing to GPNW, because they've very much kindred cons, in my limited XP (lived in Boston for 3 years, just moved to Seattle), small local indie-leaning get togethers (not really conventions, originally) that have become bigger and bigger in a very short span.

They are fundamentally not conventions in the way that Dreamation, Origins, and GenCon are conventions. They're more like your local regional convention, whatever that is, but everybody at them is super excited about independent games and most of what gets thrown down is creator-owned stuff. At least 50% of the people who show up at these conventions have independently published or hope to publish games. Even if some folks are playing 4E in the corner, they're doing it as an extension of the other play they're doing, not because that's mainly what they know and like.

In past years, it was like going to a convention in which every game you played in was really good, as opposed to the hit-or-miss of other conventions. Plus, you get to play a bunch of indie stuff that either has recently come out or is still in playtest, plus a bunch of classics. And there's totally 0% of the commercialism or idol-worship stuff that happens at conventions. If people are selling their games, they do it out of their backpack, not at booths. If (gasp!) Emily Care Boss or Jonathan Tweet sit down with you at your table, they're just another creative player, not the center of attention.

It's more like those folk music gatherings where you bring your banjo and sit down with a mixture of unknowns and big names, but have a blast. It's a convention that's pretty much entirely about PLAY and COMMUNITY.

I'll get more eyes earlier here than any GPNW forum thread.

I lost my roommate so I'm looking for a sub to share my two bed room at the Homewood Suites Hilton: $192.27 total (including tax) for Friday and Saturday night. Please whisper if you're interested. As I get closer to the date w/o a sub the price may be negotiable.
