I've just voted in Eurogamer's Game Of The Year poll. I thought it might be fun to do the same here.

    Whisper to me:

    1. Three nominations for Best Game Released In 2009.
    2. Three nominations for The Best Game You Played In 2009.

I'll count them up and, just for fun, announce some winners and runners-up and things in about a week's time.

I'll only count whispered votes. No games in playtest, please, but if it's a weird edge-case like an ashcan, it counts if you vote for it. And roleplaying games, obviously, not console games.

Apart from that, do discuss what games have been good this year, general trends, etc, etc.

I found myself wondering which games were released during 2009.

Here are a couple to jog folks along.
I so so so wish that I could have voted for Kagematsu. I want to play this something fierce, but while it was out at Gencon it's not in general circulation.

    Cheers

I looked on John Kim's site but unfortunately his timeline hasn't been updated recently so if anyone has a list of what was published this year, please do put it up.

Given I've already got a post, I thought I might as well contribute my list of new games
    Ganakagok
Escape from Tentacle city (sorry Willow!)
    Sign in stranger
    Ribbon drive
    Penny for My Thoughts
    Misspent Youth

Definitely. And if you published a game this year, do post it here. Oh, wait, that'll lead to loads of posts. Um. Someone think of a solution to that. My brain isn't working.

    Graham: Solution.

Have people whisper you their votes.
Also, have people whisper you games that came out in 2009. People can still whisper you big game lists even if they aren't voting.

Then, every few hours or once a day or so, go update your first post in this thread with a List of Games that came out in 2009 "...compiled to the best of our abilities, etc etc etc".

EDIT: I also created a thread at RPGNet in order to fill in the blanks.

    -Andy

Tell you what. Let's leave that RPG.NET thread running and I'll compile a list of games from that. If, when I post the list, your game isn't in it, whisper to me.

The title is Escape from Tentacle City, not just Tentacle City.
Also there was S/lay w/ Me. Kagematsu, Serial Homicide Unit, and probably other good games.
  1.  # 11
Kagematsu was definitely released this year. It sold something like 26 or 27 copies at Gen Con. It's currently sold out pending a reprint. But that doesn't mean it wasn't released.

Chronica Fecundis? Shouldn't that be Feudalis?
Also, the print edition of Trollbabe was released this year, ifd that counts.

And you have On Her Majesty's Arcane Service listed twice

The liste would be a lot better if sorted alphabetically IMO.

    So we're counting ashcans then?

We're grudgingly counting ashcans, if people vote for them, because the ashcan/finished product distinction can be fuzzy.

General rule for edge cases: if you vote for it, it's in.

Graham evidently thinks my game is a disease.

    I hope it's infectious.

EDIT: Also, you can add Secrets & Lies (by Dan Bayn) to that list.

Can I get 'Dawg' squeezed in there? I know it was only released as a column in Knights of the Dinner Table, but it *is* a full game.
(I'm not very good at blowing my own trumpet, but I like people to know I'm still doing stuff.)

I think it's Serial Homicide Unit.

I would play a game about cereal. Dibs on Count Chocula.

Unless there's another one, For King and Country! is Dan White's Kipling/Flashman-esque game, which has not yet been written. He just started it this week. While I expect greatness, it's a bit early to nominate it for GotY 2009... :D

Oh, and I agree with Jared - Cereal homicide would make a great game! I would prefer Peanut Butter Puffins myself. Who would suspect a puffin? Besides - organic! The peanut butter is just a big plus.

Trollbabe and Lady Blackbird: Adventures in the Wild Blue Yonder.

    They're 3 and 2 on my list.

    S/Lay w/Me is at No. 1.

    It's not just a column, it's a PDF, and it's fucking awesome.

I also plugged it on a recent Out of Character podcast.

    Hi Graham

Any chance of numbers attached to those results?

I surprises me that Montsegur 1244 is the best game released in 2009. Sure I voted for it in my top 3, but the game doesn't seem to have a groundswell of blog postings and awesome buzz around it that I'd expect for the "best game released in 2009". I really don't mean that in a negative rubbish way. I guess a lot of folks love it and don't blog/post about it online - which is fair enough - or the numbers of folks in this straw poll was really low and the poll caught the concentrated Story Games Montsegur fan bump.

I voted for Mouse Guard in my best game played in 2009. I've played it lots at conventions, and while I've had some only-okay games and some outstanding games, I've not yet had a bad or deflating one. Woot!

    Cheers

20 people voted, so it's a decent little straw poll, although not, of course, an accurate sample.

Six votes for Montsegur 1244, four for Diaspora, four for Penny. When I phrase it like that, it sounds less exciting, but of course it's actually rather wonderful if four people independently decided that your game was one of the best of the year. Those three were definitely ahead of the pack.

Other things worthy of note: Frederick voted for his own game, the shameless opportunist, but, even if we exclude that vote, Montsegur wins. Phew. That saved a difficult decision. There wasn't any evidence of block voting: for example, few people voting for Diaspora were Canadian; few people voting for Montsegur were Scandanavian; and nobody voting for Penny was called Tevis.

The voting for Best Game Played breaks down like this. Mouse Guard: a metric fuckload of votes.

Thanks for voting. I enjoyed that.

The groundswell has died down, but it was the totally The Hotness in February when it came out.

So even if I'd voted in time and put my vote in for Penny for My Thoughts, Diaspora and Vox in that order I wouldn't have swung the vote. Oh well.

Its nice to know I love two of the top games (and haven't played the third)
